Automated Radiation Detection

Pattern Matching recognition techniques, derived from chemical pattern recognition methods, are being applied to radiological detection. Algorithm coefficients, optimizations, and field testing of isotopes 137Cs, 60Co, 232Th, natU, 241Am, 152Eu, and general anomalies have been successful. Further algorithms for 131I, 226Ra, 134Cs, and 133Ba are in various stages of testing or development. The flexible pattern recognition methodology enables the nearly limitless application of the methodology to gamma-emitting radioisotopes and even other spectral systems. In addition, prior knowledge of target location characteristics is not needed due to sophisticated data processing techniques, minimizing the need for parameter tweaking. One such benefit is removing the need for altitude information for qualitative analysis and algorithm development from lab active and background information. High sensitivity has been obtained with successful detections made higher than 1000ft on single-second scans for weaker sources.
